The French Space Agency (CNES) announced on October 24 that it is promoting the development of a medical imaging system aimed at diagnosing astronauts' health on space stations, as well as on the Moon and Mars.

This project, named “Multimodal Imaging for Space Exploration,” is currently open for applications from companies or institutions interested in participating.

According to local reports, CNES has begun discussions for the development of a modular medical facility called "Medipod," which would be installed on the surfaces of the Moon and Mars in the future.

The project aims to develop a diagnostic medical imaging system to be installed inside the "Medipod."

CNES reportedly seeks the development of a "multimodal imaging system" capable of capturing various types of images to maximize flexibility in equipment development and usage.

The research for this project is scheduled to take place from 2024 to 2026.

The primary objectives of the research are fourfold: (1) to identify the current level of medical imaging technology and what would be required for long-term space exploration, (2) to determine the necessary elements for imaging equipment to operate normally in the space environment, (3) to conduct design studies for customized imaging equipment that could be used in space, and (4) to present a roadmap for system development.

Meanwhile, the “Multimodal Imaging for Space Exploration” project is part of an initiative called “Spaceship FR,” which CNES launched in 2018.

Spaceship FR is an initiative focused on researching and developing technology related to prolonged human stays on the Moon and Mars, including areas such as habitat, energy generation and storage, and utilization of local resources.

One of the projects initiated under this initiative, the “intravehicular activity spacesuit” study, was completed in early 2024.

The study involved participation from Spartan Space, a French space engineering company; the Institute of Space Medicine and Physiology; and Decathlon, a sporting goods company.

Development of the spacesuit prototype is set to begin soon, with a target of testing it on the International Space Station (ISS) in 2027.
