Pohang City Speeds Up Preparations to Improve Connected Transportation Network Ahead of Donghae Line's December Opening
Pohang City is gearing up to establish itself as a key transportation hub on the East Coast ahead of the scheduled opening of the Donghae Line (Pohang~Donghae section) in December.
The electrification project of the Donghae Line aims to electrify the section from Pohang to Donghae, with trial runs starting in September and full operation scheduled for December.
Once the project is completed, electrifying the 166.3 km section from Pohang to Samcheok and Donghae, along with the existing 6.5 km section between Samcheok and Donghae, the ITX-Ma-eum (express) and Nuriro (local) trains, with a maximum speed of 150 km/h, will be deployed first.
Pohang City expects the opening of the Donghae Line to significantly improve transportation convenience in the East Coast region, contribute to revitalizing the local economy, and attract tourists.
In response, Pohang City is preparing to improve the connected transportation network, focusing on Pohang Station and Wolpo Station, and exploring ways to link various tourism products with the operation of Donghae Line trains.
In particular, to alleviate the chronic parking problems at Pohang Station, the city plans to construct a new 30,000㎡ parking lot at the rear of Pohang Station, expanding facilities to accommodate around 1,000 vehicles.
Additionally, the city plans to install an overhead pedestrian bridge connecting the new parking lot and to improve access roads.
Moreover, Pohang City is in ongoing discussions with Korea Railroad Corporation (Korail) to increase the number of KTX trains between Pohang and Seoul Station and the number of SRT trains between Pohang and Suseo. The city is also making administrative efforts to establish a direct route connecting Pohang with the planned Daegu-Gyeongbuk Integrated New Airport.
Pohang Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, "We are continuously improving the connected transportation network in line with the opening of the Donghae Line, and we plan to strengthen discussions with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport and Korail to ensure the early deployment of KTX trains to enhance the transportation convenience for Pohang citizens."
