Former Woori Financial Chairman Sohn Tae-seung Attends First Trial, Denies Breach of Trust Charges
Former Woori Financial Group Chairman Sohn Tae-seung denied the charges against him in his first trial regarding allegations of improper loans by Woori Bank.
According to Yonhap News, Sohn appeared at the Seoul Southern District Court on the 12th for a trial presided over by Judge Yang Hwan-seung of the 15th Criminal Division. He has been indicted on charges of breach of trust under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes.
During the trial, the prosecution presented the charges, but Sohn’s legal team refrained from making a detailed statement, as they had not yet been granted access to the investigation records.
However, after the trial, Sohn’s attorney told reporters, “We do not admit to all of the charges.”
Also present in court were Sohn’s brother-in-law, identified as Mr. Kim, and a former Woori Bank executive, identified as Mr. Lim. While Kim denied the charges, Lim admitted to some of them.
According to the prosecution, between September 2021 and August 2023, Sohn allegedly approved illegal loans totaling 51.74 billion KRW to Kim’s company.
It is alleged that the two used the loaned funds to purchase real estate for profit and that Sohn received a luxury car from Kim. Additionally, 43.3 billion KRW of the loaned amount reportedly remains unpaid.
Meanwhile, in court, Kim—wearing a prison uniform—was seen entering first and exchanging a brief greeting with Sohn.
The next trial is scheduled for April 1.
