LG Heir's Son-in-Law Yoon Kwan Loses ₩12.3B Tax Lawsuit, Court Rejects Ruling Secrecy Request

 

 

 

 

Yoon Kwan, CEO of BlueRun Ventures (BRV) and the eldest son-in-law of the LG family, has lost a 12.3 billion KRW (approximately $9.2 million) income tax lawsuit against the Gangnam Tax Office. His request to restrict public access to the first-instance court ruling has also been denied by the court.

According to legal sources, the Administrative Division 5 of the Seoul Administrative Court dismissed Yoon’s petition on the 19th, which he had submitted on the 14th.

Yoon cited "protection of confidentiality" as the reason for his request. However, the court rejected his argument, stating, "The applicant’s claims alone do not sufficiently justify restricting access to and copies of the ruling."

The disclosure of the ruling has garnered significant public attention. Yoon is the husband of Koo Yeon-kyung, head of the LG Welfare Foundation and daughter of the late Koo Bon-moo, former chairman of LG Group. His strong influence in the business community has amplified interest in the lawsuit’s outcome and subsequent developments.

Beyond tax issues, Yoon has faced various allegations during the lawsuit.

The Gangnam Tax Office raised concerns that Yoon might have used forged documents when acquiring foreign nationality. The same allegations were also discussed during last year’s National Assembly audit. Additionally, claims emerged that he provided financial support to the spouse and children of a late famous singer, further fueling controversy.

Amid these allegations, Yoon had requested a closed-door trial citing privacy concerns during the final hearing in November last year, a request the court had granted. However, with the court now refusing to restrict access to the ruling, its details are likely to be made public.

Industry insiders speculate that Yoon sought to limit access to the ruling to prevent further speculation and avoid any disadvantages in his expected appeal.

A business official commented, "Since filing the lawsuit, the controversy surrounding Yoon has only grown. Now that the court has permitted access to the ruling, more details related to the case are likely to be revealed."

Yoon has yet to confirm whether he will appeal, but industry observers believe he is highly likely to challenge the ruling in the second trial.
