Samsung Electronics has passed NVIDIA's quality verification for the fourth-generation high-bandwidth memory (HBM3) for the first time. However, it is reported that the fifth-generation HBM3E is still undergoing testing.
Reuters, citing anonymous sources, reported on the 24th that Samsung Electronics' HBM3 is initially set to be used only for the H20 GPU, which was developed for the Chinese market in response to U.S. sanctions against China.
It remains uncertain whether NVIDIA will use Samsung Electronics' HBM3 in other AI processors, as the fifth-generation HBM3E has not yet met NVIDIA's standards and requires additional testing.
Sources expect that Samsung Electronics could start supplying HBM3 to NVIDIA as early as next month.
Both NVIDIA and Samsung Electronics have not responded to Reuters' request for comments.
In May, Samsung Electronics countered Reuters' report on the HBM3 quality test by stating, "We are smoothly conducting tests for HBM supply with various global partners."
Currently, SK Hynix exclusively supplies HBM to NVIDIA, making it crucial for Samsung Electronics to supply HBM to NVIDIA to expand its AI semiconductor market and improve its performance.
NVIDIA also needs Samsung Electronics' HBM supply to enhance price negotiation power and ensure supply stability.
The H20 is a GPU targeted at the Chinese market by NVIDIA following the tightening of U.S. export restrictions to China and has limited computational capabilities compared to the H100, which is sold outside of China.
