The four Indo-Pacific countries (IP4), including South Korea, will attend the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Defense Ministers' Meeting in Brussels, Belgium, for the first time this month.

Newly appointed NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced at his inaugural press conference on October 1 that Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and South Korea would be invited to the NATO Defense Ministers' Meeting, scheduled for October 17 and 18, for the first time.

The attendance of these four countries is seen as a significant turning point, expanding the relationship between NATO and the IP4 from diplomatic levels to military cooperation.

Although the IP4 countries have been consistently invited to NATO summits and foreign ministers' meetings over the past three years, this is the first opportunity to formally participate in military discussions at a defense ministers' meeting.

At the press conference, Secretary General Rutte expressed his anticipation for stronger cooperation with the IP4 countries and expressed hope that they could jointly address shared challenges in the global security environment.

The meeting is expected to discuss various international security threats faced by NATO and the IP4 countries.

In particular, security instability in the Indo-Pacific region and cooperation measures to address these issues are expected to be key agenda items.
