Prosecutors investigating the Daejang-dong land development scandal summoned Kim Man-bae, the owner of Hwacheon Daeyu, an asset management company at the center of a high-profile corruption scandal, for questioning Friday morning.

 

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office decided to resume its investigation, 23 days after he attempted suicide.

 

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office plans to question Kim on whether dividends from the project were delivered to main opposition Democratic Party(DP) leader Lee Jae-myung as political funds. Prosecutors are also trying to find out  whether Lee holds a stake in Cheonhwadongin One, whose shares are all held by Kim's company.

 

Cheonhwadongin One, which holds about 30 percent of the common shares of a special purpose company set up for the Daejang-dong project, had received 121 billion won in dividends.

 

Kim is a key figure of the Daejang-dong corruption scandal and is standing trial on charges of bribery, embezzlement and breach of trust. He was arrested in November last year but released shortly after as his detention period expired.

 

In the meantime, Chosu Ilbo, main newspaper in Korea, reported that KIm had large-scale money transactions with jouranlists of newspapers. It was reported that 

600 million won, 100 million won, and 90 million won of money were handed over to three reporters from the Hankyoreh, the Hankook Ilbo, and the JoongAng Ilbo, respectively.
