Jeju Air has regained its position as the No. 1 domestic low-cost carrier (LCC) after recovering passenger numbers that had declined following the December 29 passenger plane incident.
According to aviation statistics from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport on the 12th, the total number of passengers on ten domestic airlines in February was recorded at 7,248,276.
This marks a 9.4% decrease compared to January. Domestic flights saw a 12.5% drop, while international flights decreased by 8.2%. The base effect, influenced by the high number of passengers during the Lunar New Year holiday in January, also played a role.
By airline, major full-service carriers (FSCs) such as Korean Air (2,007,000 passengers, down 8.7%) and Asiana Airlines (1,368,000 passengers, down 11.1%) experienced an overall decline.
Meanwhile, Jeju Air saw its passenger numbers decrease only slightly from 881,000 in January to 879,000 in February, recording the smallest decline at just 0.2%.
Although international passengers dropped by 1.2%, domestic passengers increased by 2.1%, allowing Jeju Air to surpass Jin Air (863,000 passengers, down 7.6%) and T'way Air (838,000 passengers, down 9%) to reclaim the top spot among LCCs.
Air Busan, which experienced a fire incident in January, recorded 494,000 passengers, marking a significant 26.3% decrease from the previous month.
Notably, its domestic passengers plummeted by 52.8%, while international passengers also fell by 9.6%, indicating a severe impact.
An airline industry official commented, "Despite reducing operations, Jeju Air has managed to regain customer trust, minimizing passenger loss. Air Busan is also expected to focus on strengthening safety measures to restore trust."
