The financially troubled Homeplus, currently undergoing court receivership, held a meeting on the 13th with major suppliers under the auspices of the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy to discuss measures for normalizing supply transactions.
The meeting was attended by multiple partner companies, including food manufacturers, and suppliers demanded concrete measures such as shortening the settlement cycle, advance payments, collateral provision, and external financial support to ensure a stable supply of goods.
In particular, suppliers expressed concerns that Homeplus' payment settlement cycle of 45 to 60 days is longer than that of other large discount stores, causing unease. They urged Homeplus to present a clear plan for payment collection to sustain transactions.
A representative from a food company stated, "Homeplus explained that payments could be made through business operations, but suppliers believe more definitive measures are necessary. Advance payments, shortening the settlement cycle, and financial support from the parent company or external sources are essential."
Another partner company representative noted, "Most suppliers are worried about the current situation, and some have voiced the need for financial support from the parent company or government-backed guarantees."
Although some suppliers requested the provision of collateral, Homeplus reportedly showed reluctance regarding this matter.
Currently, Homeplus' assets are frozen due to court receivership, and the company faces financial debts amounting to approximately 2 trillion KRW. Concerns are growing among suppliers regarding delayed or unsettled payments.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy urged Homeplus and its suppliers to maintain stable transactions based on mutual trust. Oh Seung-chul, Director General of Industrial Policy, who presided over the meeting, emphasized, "Maintaining normal business transactions is of utmost importance. Homeplus must present a transparent payment plan to reassure suppliers."
The meeting lasted for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, during which Homeplus representatives explained the current situation and responded to supplier inquiries.
After the meeting, a Homeplus representative stated, "We will officially notify suppliers of the payment plan via an official document tomorrow."
Additionally, a representative from the food industry mentioned, "Homeplus stated that it plans to send an official letter signed by the CEO to all trading partners, including the repayment schedule."
Meanwhile, Homeplus, under the approval of the rehabilitation court, has disbursed a total of 458.4 billion KRW in payments from December last year to February this year. The company is currently prioritizing payments to small business owners and micro-enterprises. It also announced plans to complete payments to small enterprises by May and to large corporations from June onwards.
