The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved the use of additional frequency bands for non-geostationary satellite orbit (NGSO) operators, including Starlink, to provide faster and more stable broadband communication services within the United States.
In a statement released on September 26, the FCC announced that it has granted NGSO satellite operators permission to use frequencies in the 17.3-17.7 GHz band.
This frequency band is limited to use for communication services from fixed locations and will be employed through residential antennas to provide services.
Additionally, NGSO satellites must ensure that their frequency usage does not interfere with geostationary satellites, and they must comply with power limits and other conditions set by the FCC.
In its statement on the 26th, the FCC explained that the decision is part of efforts to "promote the efficient use of frequency resources, enhance competition in the satellite communications industry, and provide better quality services, particularly in areas lacking adequate communication infrastructure."
