Korea GM Union Executive Accused of Embezzling 100 Million KRW – Police Investigate

 

 

 

 

Police have launched a full-scale investigation following allegations that a former executive of the Korea GM labor union embezzled union dues amounting to over 100 million KRW.

According to the Korea GM branch of the National Metal Workers’ Union on the 24th, the union filed a complaint with the police on the 17th against former union executive A and former financial officer B on charges of occupational embezzlement.

The union detected suspicious withdrawals of approximately 1.2 billion KRW from the union dues management account between September and December 2023 without legitimate justification. Following a delegate meeting, the union decided to take legal action.

In a statement, Korea GM Union Branch Chief Ahn Kyu-baek stated, "A substantial amount of money has been withdrawn from the union’s tax account without proper grounds," adding, "We are conducting a thorough internal investigation."

He further emphasized, "Based on judicial authorities' findings, we will strictly apply union regulations and rules in handling the matter," and vowed to strengthen the management system to prevent recurrence.

Meanwhile, after receiving the complaint, the police conducted a preliminary investigation and plan to summon both the complainants and the accused to verify the facts soon.

A police official stated, "As this is still in the early stages, further investigation is required," adding, "We will carefully review the allegations based on the progress of the investigation."
