India's space startup Pixxel, headquartered in Bengaluru, has opened a new chapter for the Indian space industry by being selected as a provider of Earth observation data to NASA.

This contract marks the first instance of an Indian startup offering services to NASA, solidifying Pixxel’s achievement as a major milestone in establishing India's global standing in the space industry.

Pixxel has been chosen as one of eight companies to supply commercial satellite data to support NASA's Earth science research, and it will provide data to NASA until November 15, 2028.

The total value of the contracts with NASA amounts to $476 million, with other companies including BlackSky, Iceye US, MDA, Planet Labs, Satellogic, Teledyne Brown Engineering, and Tomorrow.io also being selected.

Pixxel was specifically recognized for its ability to supply hyperspectral Earth observation data.

This technology can play a crucial role in solving various environmental challenges, and Pixxel’s co-founder and CEO, Awais Ahmed, remarked that "this contract with NASA is a monumental achievement, and we are proud of our contribution to technology for the Earth's environment."

Pixxel is currently working on a constellation of 24 satellites, which will have the capability to capture high-resolution images of the entire Earth within 24 hours.

Pixxel has already successfully launched two technology demonstration satellites in 2022 via SpaceX and India's PSLV rockets.
