The inheritance dispute surrounding the founder of LG Group, former Chairman Koo Bon-moo, has entered a new phase.

It has been revealed that in early September, Koo Bon-moo's widow, Kim Young-sik, and his daughter, Koo Yeon-kyung (Chairperson of the LG Welfare Foundation), filed a criminal complaint with the Mapo Police Station in Seoul against Koo Bon-neung, Chairman of Heesung Group, and Ha Beom-jong, President of LG’s Business Support Division, accusing them of special theft and perjury.

The core of the complaint lies in the claim that after Koo Bon-moo passed away in 2018, Koo Bon-neung and Ha broke into the late Chairman Koo’s villa in Gwangju, Gonjiam, forced open a safe, and stole personal property inside.

The case was filed with the Mapo Police Station, and the complaint includes details that locksmiths and LG employees were involved.

Notably, Ha testified in court during the inheritance dispute trial at the Seoul Western District Court in October and November 2023, stating that he opened the safe without the heirs being present.

This testimony could be interpreted as supporting the claim that Koo Bon-neung and Ha attempted to illegally acquire Koo Bon-moo's assets.

The legal issue centers on the fact that individuals other than the heirs accessed the deceased’s property.

Koo Bon-moo’s heirs include his widow, Kim Young-sik, his daughters, Koo Yeon-kyung and Koo Yeon-soo, and his adopted son, Koo Kwang-mo.

Although only the heirs have the right to exercise control over the inheritance, the complainants argue that Koo Bon-neung and Ha opening the safe constitutes special theft.

This criminal complaint hints at the second round of the LG Group inheritance dispute.

Kim Young-sik and Koo Yeon-kyung already filed a lawsuit for inheritance recovery in February of last year, and this criminal complaint suggests the dispute is likely to escalate further.

The inheritance issue within LG Group arose suddenly with the unexpected death of Koo Bon-moo.

Legal experts assert that if the deceased did not leave behind a will or any other documentation regarding inheritance, the assets should be distributed according to the statutory inheritance ratio.

However, the complainants allege that Koo Bon-neung conspired with Ha to allow his son, Koo Kwang-mo, to monopolize a substantial portion of the inheritance, far exceeding his legal share.

This case has once again brought to light the legal and ethical questions surrounding the LG Group inheritance dispute, and the outcome of future trials is expected to have a significant impact on the group’s direction.
