Naver is facing controversy over allegations that it has been using personal information without consent in its AI-driven news recommendation service.

Critics argue that it is unfair to apply the "personal information consent" agreement from over 20 years ago, when users signed up, to the current AI-based news recommendation service.

Since 2019, Naver has been providing personalized news recommendations through its artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm.

This service uses technologies such as AiRS (AI Recommender System) and news clustering to analyze users' previously viewed articles and recommend related content.

However, criticism has arisen that Naver did not seek separate consent from existing users for the use of AI.

In particular, users who signed up before the AI service was introduced could not have anticipated that their article viewing history would be used by AI for news recommendations. Therefore, critics argue that Naver should obtain separate consent for AI usage from users who joined before August of last year, when AI usage consent was introduced.

There is also a growing demand for Naver to be transparent about the extent to which it uses users' personal information.

Additionally, there are concerns that the AI news recommendation service could exploit users' political inclinations.

Naver's AiRS algorithm utilizes models like collaborative filtering (CF) and content-based filtering (CBF) to group users with similar interests and recommend articles.

In this process, there is concern that user groups could be classified based on specific political inclinations, raising the possibility of political inclination exploitation in the event of a data leak.

The MBC labor union criticized Naver, stating that "Naver is collecting news consumption data from tens of millions of users without specific consent and grouping them based on their consumption tendencies," while demanding transparency regarding the use of personal information.

In response, Naver stated, "We cannot determine the political inclinations of news users, and the claim that political inclinations align with article consumption tendencies lacks sufficient evidence."

Naver also explained that the service reflects changes due to technological advancements and that no additional consent process is necessary.
