The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has expressed its expectation for Japan to play an "important role" in space security cooperation.
Giorgi Cioni, Director of NATO’s Defence Investment Division, made this statement at a recent international aerospace exhibition held in Japan, noting that Japan and NATO are already working through high-level discussions to explore concrete cooperation measures in the area of space security.
Cioni emphasized that "practical cooperation is taking place in areas such as space data sharing and the joint development of space capabilities."
He added that, with the growing role of private space companies, cooperation among NATO, Japan, and the private sector is more important than ever.
In July this year, NATO and Japan signed the "Individually Tailored Partnership Program" (ITPP) to address a range of security challenges, including issues related to space and cyber security.
This agreement contains specific details of cooperation between the two countries from 2023 to 2026, covering 16 areas, including cyber defense, space security, countering disinformation, artificial intelligence ( AI), quantum technology, and arms control.
Cioni stated that NATO aims to further enhance cooperation with Japan to strengthen Space Situational Awareness (SSA) and promote responsible behavior in space.
This will be pursued through Japan's participation in various training and educational programs hosted by NATO.
