The National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU), the largest union of Samsung Electronics, held a general strike resolution rally on the 8th, officially embarking on a full-scale struggle.
The rally, held in front of Gate H1 at the Samsung Electronics Hwaseong Plant in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, was attended by 6,540 union members.
Among them, 5,211 participants were from the equipment, manufacturing, and development sectors, predicting production disruptions.
The NSEU members, dressed in black raincoats and wearing red headbands with 'General Strike' written on them, began the rally by chanting slogans.
Union chairman Son Woo-mok stated, "We have come out with desperate hearts," and declared, "We will fight to the end until the management changes."
On the 1st, Samsung Electronics' management and the union held working-level negotiations and a meeting with DS Division Head Jeon Young-hyun (Vice Chairman), but failed to reach an agreement.
At the third post-mediation meeting of the Central Labor Relations Commission, the management proposed ▲ refraining from announcing wage adjustment results for non-union members before final wage negotiations with the union, ▲ providing a one-time leisure point of 500,000 KRW, ▲ reducing the mandatory vacation days by two, and ▲ mutual cooperation efforts between labor and management.
However, the union demanded ▲ one day of vacation for all employees, and ▲ special benefits such as wage increases for 855 employees who refused to sign the 2024 annual salary agreement.
The NSEU stated, "The number of participants in the general strike far exceeded expectations," adding, "Especially with over 5,000 participants from the equipment, manufacturing, and development sectors, production disruptions are inevitable." The union defines the purpose of the strike as 'production disruption.'
Meanwhile, as of the morning of the 8th, the NSEU announced that the number of union members had reached 30,657, accounting for 24% of the total employees (about 125,000) of Samsung Electronics.
This is an increase of more than 1,600 members since the end of last month.
The union plans to continue with a second strike for five days starting on the 15th if the labor negotiations do not progress positively during this strike period.
