The Ministry of Digital Affairs (MODA) of Taiwan announced at a press conference on July 8th that they have begun providing space internet services across Taiwan through communication satellites located in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Medium Earth Orbit (MEO).

This provision is led by Eutelsat OneWeb and Luxembourg's SES and will be conducted as a pilot project over the next two years.

The Ministry of Digital Affairs explained that this project is part of an initiative to strengthen the digital resilience of emergency communication networks, ensuring communication in case of disruptions due to natural disasters or an invasion by China.

The project aims to ensure that military and political command systems can operate normally in emergency situations.

According to local media reports, the Ministry of Digital Affairs tested the strength of satellite signals through 733 receivers installed nationwide, confirming that the communication network can remain stable in emergencies.

Currently, the space internet allows real-time text messaging, voice calls, video calls, and standard-definition video streaming.

Particularly in the northern region of Taiwan, the average download speed was measured at 90Mbps and the upload speed at 14Mbps.

However, the current space internet service is restricted to military and political command purposes, provided only for 12 hours a day, and requires separate approval from the National Communications Commission (NCC) for public use.

Taiwan plans to deploy space internet for the first time during the disaster relief drill on September 21st, the "National Disaster Preparedness Day."
