On the 11th, in celebration of World Population Day, Pohang City held a population policy symposium titled "Population Crisis, the Role of the State and Local Governments" at Change Up Ground to address the issues of low birth rates and the crisis of local extinction.

The symposium was organized to discuss and seek solutions for the crisis of local extinction and the outflow of young populations with experts and citizens.

In the first part, Dr. Sang-rim Lee, Senior Researcher at Seoul National University's Population Policy Research Center, presented "Population Changes and Pohang's Response," and Dr. Young-mi Shin, Senior Researcher at the same center, presented "Can Families and Youth Dream of a Future in Pohang?" focusing on Pohang City's strategies for creating a family-friendly community.

In the second part, Jin-hong Kim, former Deputy Director of the Pohang branch of the Bank of Korea, chaired a discussion with the presenters and panelists from the first part, creating a platform for public discussion on the roles of the government and local authorities in the population crisis.

Dong-gwang Son, Chairman of Pohang City's Youth Policy Coordination Committee, discussed "The Present and Future of Pohang City's Youth Policy," and Chul-kyu Kim, former President of Handong University Student Council, presented "What is the Problem of Youth Population Outflow?" They examined the reality of young people concentrating in the metropolitan area and sought solutions to this issue.

Participants agreed that to retain young people in the region, stable jobs, education, and excellent living conditions, including healthcare, must be guaranteed, necessitating various policies.

Additionally, Yong-tae In, a father of multiple children, discussed "Is Childcare Only a Family Issue?" and Dong-hyuk Park, an office worker, presented "Pohang City's Population Policy from the Perspective of an Office Worker," examining the causes of low birth rates and discussing the roles of the government and local authorities in addressing the population crisis.

Mayor Kang-deok Lee stated, "We are making multifaceted efforts to create a city where it is easy to have children, a city where work and family are balanced, and a sustainable city where young people can stay and grow the economy." He added, "We will actively reflect the various policy proposals discussed in municipal administration to make Pohang a model case for overcoming the crises of low birth rates and local extinction."
