The National Intelligence Service(NIS) and police raided several locations on Wednesday, including the headquarters of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions(KCTU) in Seoul, which is on suspicion of anti-communist law violations by some of its members.
Investigators from the NIS and the National Police Agency (NPA) began their raid on KCTU in central Seoul about 10 a.m.
They have reportedly obtained a search and seizure warrant for the KCTU from the court in connection with alleged violations of the National Security Law by some of its members.
There was an intense confrontation between the investigators and KCTU officials for three hours involving a physical altercation in the process. KCTU demanded the search and seizure be conducted in the presence of its lawyers.
The NIS and NPA also raided the headquarters of the KCTU-affiliated Korean Health and Medical Workers' Union in Seoul.
The spy agency has reportedly been investigating alleged anti-communist law violations by some progressive labor figures in Jeju and elsewhere. They were said to establish an underground network that collaborated with North Korean agents for over five years.
