The Samsung Group Federation of Enterprise Labor Unions (hereinafter referred to as the Federation Union), representing the labor unions of five affiliates within Samsung Group, is gaining attention by proposing significant changes to help Samsung overcome its crisis.
The Federation Union sent an official letter to Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong and Samsung Business Support Task Force Head Jeong Hyun-ho (Vice Chairman), emphasizing the impact Samsung's crisis could have on the entire Korean business sector and urging innovative responses.
In the letter sent on the 17th, the Federation Union proposed various measures, including the introduction of AI.
The first proposal calls for the complete lifting of internal restrictions on the use of ChatGPT, asserting that “Samsung must utilize the best tools and work in line with the current trends if it aims to remain a world-class company.”
They also stressed the need to create an efficient work culture through the adoption of AI.
Additionally, the Federation Union called for innovation in the personnel system and performance compensation systems, emphasizing that improving organizational culture is difficult without reforms to the personnel system.
Regarding the performance compensation system, they urged the company to "raise the base salary and reform the salary structure so that the excess profit bonus (OPI) can serve its original role as performance-based compensation."
In particular, they proposed the introduction of Restricted Stock Units (RSUs) as a new compensation method, demanding a fairer and more innovative performance compensation system.
Through this proposal, the Federation Union emphasized cooperation with the management but also stressed the need for bold changes to the existing system for Samsung's continued innovation.
