The U.S. Space Command announced on October 14 that France and Germany have officially joined "Operation Olympic Defender," a multinational space security initiative led by the United States.

With this addition, European major powers are strengthening cooperation with the U.S. in the area of space security, while concerns about the militarization of space are growing.

Operation Olympic Defender, launched in 2013, aims to coordinate the space capabilities of member nations, enhance the resilience of space systems, deter hostile acts in space, and reduce the proliferation of space debris.

The existing members include the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. With France and Germany joining, the initiative has now expanded further.

General Stephen Whiting, commander of the U.S. Space Command, stated during the announcement, "As the world increasingly relies on space systems for both civilian and military purposes, it is essential to protect them," adding that "satellites, once considered tools for communication and science, could now become prime targets in the event of a conflict."

Whiting also emphasized that space security is emerging as a critical global strategic issue.

Experts interpret France and Germany's participation as a sign of Europe's strengthened commitment to space security cooperation and predict that more countries may join the U.S.-led space security collaboration in the future.
