Taiwan is expected to complete the connection of its 24-hour satellite communication network by the end of this month.

Chunghwa Telecom, the OneWeb service provider in Taiwan, announced this plan on October 13.

This development is anticipated to play a crucial role in Taiwan's communication infrastructure, enabling it to serve as an alternative to terrestrial communication networks during emergencies, such as natural disasters or war.

Taiwan’s satellite communication service began in July, and Luxembourg-based SES’s medium-orbit satellite communication service was also introduced.

The initial service was available for 12 hours a day, mainly for military and political command purposes, but with this expansion, 24-hour service will be available nationwide.

The Taiwanese government has been building infrastructure by installing 733 satellite receivers nationwide, and this expansion is expected to greatly broaden the range of satellite communication network utilization.

This is part of a two-year pilot project, focusing on ensuring a stable communication network during emergencies, with the government and military as primary users.

Alex Chien, Co-President of Chunghwa Telecom, pointed out that the bandwidth of satellite communication is limited, and companies will primarily rely on high-bandwidth communication via undersea cables.
