The United States and Italy held the first U.S.-Italy Space Dialogue on October 10-11 in Rome.
This dialogue was a follow-up to the strengthened cooperation plan agreed upon during the meeting between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and U.S. President Joe Biden in July 2023.
The delegations from both countries exchanged information on national space policies, discussing Italy’s new space law and the U.S. space priorities framework.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in various areas, including addressing the climate crisis, ensuring the safe and sustainable use of space, national security cooperation, and commercial space partnerships.
They also emphasized the need to strengthen global governance of space activities to prevent military threats in space and urged compliance with the Outer Space Treaty.
Furthermore, they called on all nations to cease destructive anti-satellite missile tests and pledged to develop and implement international best practices for safe and sustainable space use.
Commercial space cooperation was also a key topic of discussion.
The two nations plan to strengthen research activities in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) by expanding partnerships between the space industries and exploring mutual investment opportunities for private space companies.
In addition, they discussed ways to enhance cybersecurity for space systems and improve the security and resilience of related services.
The two countries will continue to pursue lunar exploration and scientific cooperation through NASA's Artemis mission.
In particular, they welcomed collaboration on Italy's Multi-Purpose Habitation Module (MPH) and agreed to discuss future cooperation on activities on the lunar surface and in Low Earth Orbit.
