SpaceX has submitted a license modification request to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to maximize the performance of its second-generation (Gen2) Starlink satellites.

The request, filed on October 11, came shortly after the successful completion of the fifth test flight of Starship. Industry experts believe that SpaceX is preparing for the deployment of Gen2 satellites.

The Gen2 Starlink satellites can offer much more powerful communication capabilities than the first-generation satellites, but they are larger and heavier, requiring the Starship rocket for launch.

The first-generation satellites are being launched by Falcon 9 rockets, currently providing internet services worldwide with download speeds of 25 to 220 Mbps and upload speeds of 5 to 20 Mbps.

In the document submitted to the FCC, SpaceX emphasized the necessity of the license modification, stating that "if the modification is approved, we will be able to provide gigabit-speed, ultra-low-latency broadband satellite communication to billions of people worldwide."

One of the key changes requested is to lower the deployment altitude of the satellites from the current 525 km, 530 km, and 535 km to 480 km, 485 km, and 475 km.

SpaceX stated that lowering the altitude would allow them to maximize the number of orbital planes and satellites per plane, while maintaining the planned fleet of fewer than 29,988 satellites.

Additionally, SpaceX proposed reducing the minimum elevation angle for the satellites from 25 degrees to 20 degrees, enabling connections with more ground stations and increasing connection time.

Furthermore, to improve the quality of mobile and fixed home internet services, SpaceX requested approval to use the Ka, V, and E frequency bands, thereby increasing flexibility in frequency use.

This request is expected to present a challenge for the FCC, as it could impact the business of competing companies.
