Hyundai Motor unveiled the concept car "Initium," marking a new chapter in hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) technology.
On the 31st, at the "Clearly Committed: Unwavering Belief" event held at Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang, Hyundai introduced this model for the first time, showcasing its vision and design direction for a future hydrogen society.
"Initium," which means "beginning" in Latin, reflects Hyundai’s ambition to be a leader in opening the door to a hydrogen society.
Jang Jae-hoon, President of Hyundai Motor Company, stated, "Hydrogen is the energy of the future for generations to come, and Hyundai has firmly believed in its value, pursuing continuous innovation for 27 years. Initium represents another leap towards the future potential of the hydrogen industry."
The design of Initium incorporates "Art of Steel," one of Hyundai's design languages, visually expressing the purity and strength symbolized by steel, representative of hydrogen's essence.
The lamp design also embodies the identity of Hyundai Motor Group's hydrogen business brand, "HTWO," highlighting its symbolism. Initium, equipped with expanded hydrogen tank capacity and aerodynamically designed wheels, boasts a range of over 650 km on a single charge and a maximum motor output of 150 kW.
Initium also features a "Route Planner" function that allows users to check the operational status and waiting times at nearby hydrogen refueling stations, as well as a V2L function to supply power during outdoor activities.
For increased second-row space, the seat and rear door opening angles have been adjusted, and safety has been enhanced with a nine-airbag system and reinforced front and side body structures.
At the event, a "Hydrogen Heritage Talk" session was held to introduce Hyundai's journey in hydrogen fuel cell development.
Since establishing a dedicated hydrogen R&D organization in 1998, Hyundai has led the global FCEV market, becoming the first to mass-produce hydrogen electric vehicles in 2013 with the launch of the NEXO.
The event venue featured representative models like the Tucson ix Fuel Cell and NEXO, along with development materials from that time, showcasing Hyundai's progress in hydrogen technology.
