In the third quarter of this year, domestic passenger car exports declined for the first time in 10 quarters.
As demand for major export items such as mid-sized gasoline vehicles and some eco-friendly cars slowed, passenger car exports in the third quarter recorded $14 billion, a 4.7% decrease compared to the same period last year.
According to the Korea Customs Service on the 31st, this is the first time passenger car exports have declined since the first quarter of 2022.
In particular, a sharp decline in exports of eco-friendly vehicles, including electric vehicles (-36.5%) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (-28.5%), is analyzed as the main factor behind this decrease.
On the other hand, hybrid vehicle exports among eco-friendly cars increased by 71.3%, achieving a record high of $3.01 billion in the third quarter.
The regions where exports declined are also notable. While the U.S. and Canadian markets showed growth with increases of 1.2% and 30.2%, respectively, exports to Australia (-7.4%), the U.K. (-8.3%), and France (-27.5%) decreased.
Meanwhile, passenger car imports rose by 12.6% from a year ago, reaching $3 billion, marking a return to an upward trend after five quarters.
In particular, imports of eco-friendly and mid-sized cars increased, with eco-friendly car imports totaling $2.11 billion, accounting for a record high of 69.3% of total imports.
The average unit price of exported vehicles in this quarter fell by 1.7% to $23,562, while the average unit price of imported vehicles also dropped by 10.7% to $40,711.
