The Swedish military is actively pursuing the enhancement of its space defense capabilities for national defense.

Sweden’s armed forces are developing their first military reconnaissance satellite, "Heimdall 0-C," aiming for a launch between 2027 and 2028.

This satellite, designed to test reconnaissance technology in orbit, is set to be launched from the Esrange Space Centre in northern Sweden.

Although specific details about "Heimdall 0-C" have not been disclosed, it marks the trial phase for a full-fledged reconnaissance satellite system, serving to verify the technical capabilities of future operational satellites.

Following this, the Swedish military plans to launch four reconnaissance satellites, "Heimdall 1 to 4," by 2030, with the goal of deploying them for operational use. These satellites will provide reconnaissance data to the army, navy, and air force, helping to strengthen national defense capabilities.

About a year and a half ago, the Swedish military also established a space division dedicated to satellite operations and supply chain management. Additionally, a Space Operations Center was set up in the Uppsala area to support satellite operations.

These organizations are expected to become the core of Sweden’s space defense strategy in the future.

This project is part of Sweden’s efforts within Europe to establish its own space defense capabilities, representing an important step for the Swedish military in securing independent surveillance and reconnaissance capacity in space.
