India's largest defense company by revenue, Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T), is expanding into the space sector.
The company is particularly interested in the production of launch vehicles.
In a recent interview with Reuters, L&T Senior Vice President AT Ramchandani said, “The space economy is growing,” and added, “We will leverage our 50 years of relationship with ISRO in launch vehicle manufacturing.” He did not disclose specific details of the plan.
L&T has been manufacturing and supplying components for India’s major defense and space missions, including missiles, lunar and Mars probes, and satellites.
L&T has also formed a consortium with India’s aerospace company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to manufacture the Indian government’s main launch vehicle, the PSLV.
The first launch of the PSLV rocket built by these two companies is expected to take place in early 2025. The cost of each PSLV rocket is reported to be around 2 billion rupees ($23.8 million).
According to reports, L&T is also interested in producing the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
The SSLV is a small launch vehicle capable of carrying up to 500 kg of payload to low Earth orbit.
Ramchandani noted that the initial plan for the SSLV’s development aimed for around 12 launches per year, with the potential for up to 15 launches annually depending on demand.
He added that the transportation cost per kilogram for the SSLV rocket is around $15,000, describing it as a “cost-effective launch vehicle.”
