The first beneficiaries of Japan's "Space Strategy Fund," which was launched in November 2023, were announced on October 25.
The selected companies are Nikon, Shimizu Construction, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
These companies will use the strategic funds to develop cost-saving technologies for manufacturing metal components for rockets using 3D printers. Nikon will receive up to 5 billion yen, while Shimizu Construction and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will each receive up to 3 billion yen.
Specifically, Nikon will conduct research to create precise parts for rocket engines using 3D printing. Shimizu Construction and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will explore manufacturing methods for liquid fuel tanks using 3D printers.
In addition to 3D printing, Japan aims to develop technologies in various space-related fields, including small satellites, lunar exploration, quantum encryption technology, and commercial space stations.
Thus, more companies and institutions are expected to benefit from the fund in the future.
The "Space Strategy Fund" is a project in which the Japanese government plans to invest 1 trillion yen over the next 10 years to enhance the competitiveness of its domestic space industry.
Through this, the Japanese government aims to expand the country's space-related market size from the current approximately 26 billion dollars to 52 billion dollars by the early 2030s.
