The European Space Agency (ESA) recently announced its selection of four European space companies to develop reusable rocket technology.
The selected companies are (1) Germany's Rocket Factory Augsburg, (2) Germany's The Exploration Company, (3) France's ArianeGroup, and (4) Germany's Isar Aerospace.
This project is divided into two categories: (1) High-thrust Reusable Space Transportation (THRUST!) and (2) Boosters for European Space Transportation (BEST!).
THRUST! Category
The goal of the THRUST! category is to develop a high-thrust staged combustion engine based on liquid fuel. Rocket Factory Augsburg and The Exploration Company have been selected in this category.
Rocket Factory Augsburg has already developed a multi-stage propulsion engine named "Helix" with its own technology. However, the thrust of this engine is only up to 10 tons. To complement this, The Exploration Company is developing an engine called "Typhoon," which has a maximum thrust of 200 tons.
BEST! Category
The BEST! category aims to promote the development of a reusable first-stage rocket booster, with ArianeGroup and Isar Aerospace selected for this category.
ArianeGroup is developing "Themis," a reusable first-stage booster.
Isar Aerospace is developing the "Spectrum" launch vehicle, which is 28 meters tall and can send up to 1 ton of payload into low Earth orbit. Simultaneously, it is also developing "Spectrum 2," a launch vehicle capable of lifting up to 4 tons into low orbit.
