Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has requested China’s assistance in the construction of a rocket launch site.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn recently conveyed this request to Han Zhiqiang, the Chinese Ambassador to Thailand, during a meeting. Thailand and China will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2025.
During the meeting, the two countries agreed to pursue various cooperative efforts to enhance mutually beneficial relations, including trade, investment in emerging industries, and cultural exchanges.
Specifically, Prime Minister Paetongtarn asked Ambassador Han to encourage greater participation and investment from Chinese companies in building a data center, an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing base, and a small rocket launch site for low-Earth orbit satellite launches within Thailand.
Thailand is promoting the construction of a space launch site as a national project, leveraging its geographical advantage close to the equator. A feasibility study on this initiative began in 2022. The Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are considered promising locations for the launch site.
