The European Space Agency (ESA) has embarked on securing in-orbit refueling technology.
To achieve this, ESA announced on October 29 that it has selected the following partners: (1) ArianeGroup, (2) GMV Aerospace and Defence, (3) MT Aerospace, (4) SAB Aerospace, and (5) The Exploration Company. The selected companies will soon enter negotiations with ESA for contractual agreements.
This project is being pursued as part of an ESA-led initiative called "In-Space Proof-of-Concepts" (InSPoC).
The InSPoC initiative consists of four missions: (1) In-orbit rendezvous and docking (InSPoC-1), (2) in-orbit refueling and propellant management (InSPoC-2), (3) onboard and shared information (InSPoC-3), and (4) containerization and cargo transport (InSPoC-4).
The refueling project currently underway corresponds to the second mission (InSPoC-2).
The five selected companies will work on developing core technologies for establishing in-orbit cryogenic storage and in-orbit refueling.
Meanwhile, on October 9, ESA announced the selection of five companies to develop technologies related to “onboard and shared information” (InSPoC-3).
The selected companies are (1) OHB Digital Connect, (2) GMV Aerospace and Defence, (3) Zaitra, (4) Huld, and (5) Orbital Paradigm.
These five companies will focus on developing technologies related to autonomous operations, space environment updates, space logistics coordination, and collaboration, all of which are essential for developing reusable space tugs.
