NASA released the latest information on October 28 about the lunar South Pole region where American astronauts will land as part of the Artemis III mission. A total of nine candidate landing sites were announced.
NASA stated that the landing site information was updated based on local surface conditions and the performance of the lunar lander (HLS) being developed by SpaceX.
The nine candidate landing sites are:
Peak near Cabeus B
Haworth
Malapert Massif
Mons Mouton Plateau
Mons Mouton
Nobile Rim 1
Nobile Rim 2
de Gerlache Rim 2
Slater Plain
Previously, in August 2022, NASA had released 13 candidate sites. The nine sites announced this time include some mentioned in the 2022 announcement and some newly added.
A common feature of the nine sites announced is that they are all craters located in the lunar South Pole region. It is estimated that shadowed areas within the craters near the lunar South Pole contain ice in the form of water, which holds significant value for science and lunar exploration.
Dr. Tamra George of NASA’s Johnson Space Center said, “We prioritized safe landing and safe return of astronauts when selecting the landing sites.”
