China has launched two 0.5m resolution SAR satellites into sun-synchronous orbit.
The satellites, named ‘SuperView Neo-2 03’ and ‘SuperView Neo-2 04’ (also known as Siwei Gaojing-2 03 and 04), were sent into space aboard a Long March-2C rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on November 24.
The Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST) announced that the satellites were successfully deployed into their designated orbits one hour after the launch.
SAST also confirmed that the satellites are operated by China Siwei Surveying and Mapping Technology Co., Ltd. Both SAST and Siwei are subsidiaries of the state-owned China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC). According to SAST, the two satellites are 50cm resolution SAR satellites and part of the SuperView Neo Satellite Constellation under construction by Siwei.
This constellation will eventually consist of 28 satellites, including 16 EO/IR satellites with 0.2–3m resolution, 4 EO/IR satellites with 0.7m resolution and a 100km swath, and 8 SAR satellites with 0.5m resolution.
The two newly launched satellites will operate in tandem, collecting and transmitting data to Earth for applications such as natural resource management, urban security, emergency response, and maritime operations.
Previously, Siwei launched two satellites in 2016, two more in 2018, another pair in 2022, and one satellite in April 2024 to build the constellation. All satellites have been deployed into sun-synchronous orbit.
This launch marks China’s 57th space rocket launch in 2024. However, with a target of 100 launches for the year, it seems unlikely that China will meet this goal.
