Samsung Electronics is set to conduct a space environment test of its memory chips in 2025. The test will involve launching the chips into low Earth orbit aboard South Korea’s KSLV-2 rocket. However, it has not yet been determined whether Samsung will develop space-grade chips for this test. Currently, Samsung does not produce space-grade chips.
The payload carrying Samsung’s memory chips will be developed by the Korean satellite startup Nara Space.
On June 28, Samsung Electronics and Nara Space announced an agreement for the in-space testing of Samsung semiconductors.
"We look forward to successfully evaluating the reliability of Samsung Electronics' memory chips through this agreement," said Hwang Yoo-chul, master of Samsung Electronics' DS division. He did not provide further details about the agreement.
Park Jae-pil, CEO of Nara Space, said, "The collaboration with Samsung Electronics, a global semiconductor company, will greatly benefit the ecosystem of the domestic space industry."
Park mentioned that it has not yet been decided whether Samsung will develop space-grade chips for the test and added that "details are under discussion."
