Recently, TSMC and Google have formalized their collaboration for the mass production of the 5th generation application processor (AP) chip 'Tensor G5', which will be featured in the next-generation 'Pixel 10' series smartphones. This development puts Samsung Electronics at risk of losing a major customer.
TSMC and Google have entered the 'tape-out' stage for the mass production of the 'Tensor G5'. Tape-out is the final stage before semiconductor mass production, where the final design layout is sent to the manufacturing line.
The 'Tensor G5' is set to be produced using TSMC's 3-nanometer process and is planned to be incorporated into Google's 'Pixel 10' series. This chip is expected to significantly improve performance compared to existing products.
Currently, Google has entrusted the production of the 4th generation AP 'Tensor G4', which will be featured in the 'Pixel 9' series, to Samsung Electronics' 4-nanometer foundry. However, with the collaboration for the mass production of the 'Tensor G5', it is likely that Google will continue to outsource its AP production to TSMC. This could result in a significant loss for Samsung Electronics.
According to industry sources, TSMC holds a competitive edge over Samsung in the 3-nanometer process, with Taiwan's Industrial and Commercial Times highlighting TSMC's technological superiority.
Samsung Electronics has not yet secured large customer orders, and as of the first quarter of this year, its market share decreased by 1 percentage point to 13% compared to the previous quarter. In contrast, TSMC's market share increased by 1 percentage point to 62% during the same period.
Samsung Electronics is striving to secure major customers with its 3-nanometer process by leveraging its 'Gate-All-Around (GAA)' technology. The GAA technology is considered innovative as it enhances data processing speed and power efficiency compared to existing processes.
