Pohang City Commences Construction of 'Pohang International Exhibition Convention Center (POEX)'... Aiming to Become a MICE Industry City by 2027

 

 

 

Pohang City is set to begin the construction of the 'Pohang International Exhibition Convention Center (POEX),' a key infrastructure project for the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industry, which the city is actively promoting.

The city announced that it will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Pohang International Exhibition Convention Center (POEX) on the 18th at the site of the former Camp Reeve, located at 1287 Jangseong-dong.

To commemorate the groundbreaking ceremony of the convention center, which will be a regional landmark, the event will feature celebratory performances by trot singers Ryu Yeon-ju and Shin Sung.

The construction of the Pohang International Exhibition Convention Center began with the establishment of the basic plan in 2020, followed by a feasibility study, central financial investment review, design competition, and construction bid announcement. In June of this year, Dongbu Construction Co., Ltd. was selected as the contractor.

The Pohang International Exhibition Convention Center will be built with a total investment of 216.6 billion won, covering a total floor area of 63,818 square meters (approximately 19,300 pyeong). It will feature one basement level and five above-ground floors, including exhibition halls, a convention hall, auxiliary facilities, rental offices, and parking spaces for 838 vehicles. The first phase of the project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.

Pohang City plans to fully prepare for its leap as a MICE industry city by 2027, when POEX is expected to be in full operation. This includes developing international exhibition events for the city's major industries, such as steel, secondary batteries, bio, and hydrogen, as well as international conferences on the theme of transforming from a steel-centered gray city to a human-centered eco-friendly and carbon-neutral city.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, "The Pohang International Exhibition Convention Center will become a new landmark representing Pohang. Through this, we will actively respond to the demand for new industry exhibitions and conventions, host world-class forums and events, foster the MICE industry, create jobs, and invigorate the local economy."
