Canadian space robotics manufacturer MDA Space has begun development of the robotic arm ‘Canadarm3,’ which will be installed on NASA’s lunar orbital ‘Gateway’ project.
In a statement released on June 27, the company announced that it had signed a contract worth approximately 1 billion Canadian dollars with the Canadian Space Agency.
In the statement, MDA Space CEO Mike Greenley expressed his excitement about the project, saying, "We are very pleased to see Canadarm3 becoming more concrete and realistic."
The contract includes Phase C and D, encompassing the design, assembly, and testing of Canadarm3. Design work will be completed in Phase C, while assembly and testing will take place in Phase D. All work is expected to be completed by March 2030.
The development of Canadarm3 began in 2020, following the Canadian government’s official announcement of its participation in the Gateway project in 2019.
Subsequently, in 2020, MDA commenced the development of Canadarm3 through a Phase A contract. MDA has previously developed the ‘Canadarm’ robotic arm, which was mounted on the Space Shuttle, and Canadarm2, which is currently attached to the International Space Station (ISS).
MDA’s robotic technology is also being utilized in other space projects. The company’s robotic technology will be integrated into the Lunar Rover ‘Lunar Dawn’ developed by the lunar vehicle manufacturer ‘Lunar Outpost.’
Additionally, in June, MDA announced its participation in the private space station ‘Starlab’ project. MDA plans to provide robotic arms and related technology that will operate outside the Starlab space station in exchange for a stake in Starlab.
