The government has decided to raise city gas rates for the first time in a year.
On the 5th, Korea Gas Corporation announced through a press release that it will increase city gas rates for residential (household and general use) customers by 6.8% starting from August 1st.
With this increase, the average monthly city gas bill for a four-person household in Seoul is expected to rise by about 3,770 KRW (including VAT).
The wholesale rate for residential city gas will increase by 1.41 KRW per megajoule (MJ), and the general use rate will rise by 1.30 KRW per MJ.
Korea Gas Corporation explained that the decision to raise rates was made to address the accumulated unpaid balances resulting from supplying city gas below cost.
With this increase, city gas prices for residential use will approach cost levels, which is expected to put a brake on the increase in Korea Gas Corporation's unpaid balances.
However, there are concerns that the increase in city gas rates may exacerbate the living cost burden on ordinary people and drive up inflation.
The government plans to alleviate the burden of the rate hike by expanding energy voucher support for vulnerable groups.
This city gas rate increase is the result of a combination of rising international energy prices and the need to address Korea Gas Corporation's accumulated unpaid balances. The government will continue to closely monitor the energy market situation and review whether to adjust rates in the future.
