A Woori Bank employee who embezzled 18 billion won through fraudulent loans has been indicted and detained.

 

 

 

On the 9th, the Changwon District Prosecutor's Office Criminal Division 1 (Chief Prosecutor Hwang Bo-hyeon-hee) announced that they had indicted and detained A, a 30-year-old employee of a Woori Bank branch in the Gyeongnam region, on charges of fraud under the Aggravated Punishment for Specific Economic Crimes Act, for embezzling more than 10 billion won after falsifying loan documents and obtaining fraudulent loans.

A is accused of applying for fraudulent loans under the names of 17 customers, including individuals and companies, 35 times between July last year and May this year, and diverting 17.77 billion won in loan funds to acquaintances' accounts.

He allegedly forged loan application documents such as 'credit transaction agreements' by stealing the identities of 17 customers who had already taken out loans, sent them to the bank's headquarters, and deceived the responsible officers into believing they were legitimate loan applications from customers.

Between July and September last year, he contacted two individual loan customers and tricked them into temporarily withdrawing already deposited loan funds by claiming it was necessary for the remaining loan procedures, thereby diverting 220 million won to acquaintances' accounts.

A is reported to have planned the crime to secure funds for investing in virtual assets. It was revealed that out of the approximately 18 billion won in embezzled loan funds, about 15 billion won was spent on purchasing virtual assets, and about 2.7 billion won was used to cover existing loan debts.

The prosecution and police have frozen deposits worth about 4.5 billion won in virtual asset exchanges, bank deposits, and lease deposits.

The Changwon District Prosecutor's Office stated, "We will ensure that A receives punishment corresponding to his crimes and will do our utmost to maintain the indictment while continuing to strictly crack down on illegal economic crimes and to recover criminal proceeds."
