Incheon Metropolitan City is accelerating the training of semiconductor professionals by being selected for various educational projects by the Ministry of Education.
Recently, Incheon announced that Inha University and Yonsei University were selected for the 'Semiconductor Specialized University Support Project,' and Inha Technical College was selected for the 'Semiconductor Talent Training Bootcamp Project.'
With this selection, Incheon has established a solid foundation for training semiconductor talent.
In particular, following the selection of Incheon Semiconductor High School for the 'Contract-type Specialized High School Project' and Inha University for the 'Industry Innovation Talent Growth (Overseas Connection) Project,' a total of four semiconductor talent training projects have been selected, securing a total of 41 billion KRW in national funding until 2029.
The 'Semiconductor Specialized University Support Project' supports universities in operating semiconductor-specialized departments and interdisciplinary majors. Inha University and Yonsei University were selected for this project.
Inha University, along with Kangwon National University, was selected for the metropolitan-non-metropolitan co-growth model, while Yonsei University was selected for the metropolitan solo model, securing 12 billion KRW and 14.8 billion KRW in national funding, respectively.
Inha University plans to focus on the 'Chiplet Semiconductor' field, and Yonsei University plans to focus on the 'Device·Process Development and Circuit·System' field, training 350 and 360 professionals, respectively.
Particularly, Yonsei University will establish an intelligent semiconductor major at the Songdo International Campus starting in the 2025 academic year, selecting 35 new students and nurturing them to lead the core technologies in artificial intelligence semiconductors.
Additionally, Inha Technical College was selected for the 'Semiconductor Talent Training Bootcamp' and will receive 7.5 billion KRW in national funding over five years starting in 2024. It will provide short-term intensive education programs for students aspiring to work in the semiconductor field in collaboration with companies.
The goal is to train a total of 900 semiconductor professionals, awarding micro-degrees to graduates and helping them find relevant jobs.
Through this selection, Incheon has established a step-by-step talent training system from on-site practical personnel to associate degree, bachelor's, and master's and doctoral levels in cooperation with local schools and companies.
To achieve this, Incheon has made considerable efforts in discussing semiconductor promotion directions, administrative and financial support, and preparing business plans in collaboration with local universities and the Incheon Office of Education.
Yoo Je-beom, head of the Future Industry Bureau, stated, "Excellent professionals are essential to support the cultivation of semiconductors and advanced industries, which will determine the future national competitiveness," and added, "With this selection of public projects, we will work closely with universities and the Incheon Office of Education to train customized professionals for small and medium-sized enterprises and resolve labor shortages in the industry. We will do our best to strengthen the competitiveness of the local semiconductor industry and play a pivotal role in national economic development."
