The Polish Łukasiewicz Institute of Aviation has successfully launched its small launch vehicle, ‘ILR-33 Amber 2K,’ which reached space, surpassing an altitude of 100 km, on July 3 at Norway's Andøya Space Center.

According to local reports, the ‘ILR-33 Amber 2K,’ which uses a hybrid fuel core stage and two solid fuel side boosters, reached an altitude of 101 km, higher than the Kármán line.

This marks the first time Poland has reached space with a domestically developed rocket.

Michał Wierciński, Deputy Director of the Polish Space Agency, hailed it as a “historic moment,” stating, “A Polish rocket has never reached this level before.”

The Łukasiewicz Institute of Aviation began developing the ILR-33 Amber rocket in 2014 and conducted its first launches in 2017 and 2019.

The upgraded ‘ILR-33 Amber 2K’ rocket's first launch took place in October 2022 at the Polish Air Force Training Center in Ustka, reaching a maximum altitude of 23 km at that time.

To achieve higher target altitudes, the launch site was moved to Norway's Andøya Space Center, leading to this successful outcome.

The Łukasiewicz Institute of Aviation announced that they have already secured customers who will use the ILR-33 Amber 2K rocket between 2025 and 2027. Polish company Thorium Space plans to use this rocket for research purposes. They also revealed plans to start developing a larger rocket than the ILR-33 Amber 2K.
