President Yoon Suk Yeol visited the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi, Monday, which is a symbol of the two countries' partnership.
Yoon traveled to the Barakah plant, a day after the UAE announced $30 billion worth of investments in Korea. UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Yoon, along with the UAE's Deputy Prime Minister Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan toured the facility. The Barakah plant is the first nuclear power plant that Korea built overseas and the first civilian nuclear power plant in the Middle East.
Speaking at the event, Yoon said that the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant has a symbolic meaning representing the special strategic partnership between Korea and the UAE. "As Team Korea showcased the country's capabilities in the nuclear power industry, now is the time for both Korea and the UAE to join hands to create additional nuclear power partnerships in the UAE and other countries, with the success of the Barakah plant," Yoon said.
"Based on the success of Barakah, South Korea and the UAE should join forces to produce greater achievements, such as through cooperation on additional nuclear power plants in the UAE and joint expansion overseas," Yoon added.
The first reactor was commissioned in April 2021 and the second in March 2022. A third and fourth reactor are currently under construction and Unit 3 is scheduled to be commercially operational later this year. When all four reactors are fully operational, the nuclear plant is expected to provide up to 25 percent of the UAE's electricity.
The UAE president said that the partnership has brought “significant benefits” to both countries and has enabled opportunities for cooperation in many key sectors, including nuclear energy. “I am proud of the Emirati, Korean and international teams working together at Barakah, as they complete another unit to strengthen the UAE’s clean electricity portfolio and set the global benchmark for nuclear energy project delivery,” said President Mohammed.
The ceremony was attended by business executives from companies involved in the Barakah project, including Samsung Electronics Executive Chairman Lee Jae-yong and Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Euisun Chung.
