The Asiana Airlines Pilots' Union (APU) has applied for mediation with the Seoul Regional Labor Relations Commission after failing to reach an agreement in the 2024 wage negotiations.

In a statement released on the 4th, the pilots' union stated, "Despite six rounds of negotiations, we have been unable to narrow differences on improving working conditions for narrow-body aircraft pilots and ensuring employment and welfare benefits related to the sale of the cargo division."

The union claimed that despite minimizing their demands in consideration of the ongoing merger between Asiana Airlines and Korean Air, as well as the sale of the cargo division, the company consistently maintained an uncompromising stance.

In particular, the union demanded employment security and welfare guarantees for cargo pilots being transferred to Air Incheon and called for the payment of a 'transition delay allowance' due to delays in transitioning narrow-body aircraft pilots to wide-body aircraft.

Following the breakdown of negotiations, the union declared that it would refuse to participate in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s retraining program for cargo pilots starting from today.

Additionally, the union warned that if no agreement is reached with the company, it will hold a vote among its members and proceed with industrial action.

In response, Asiana Airlines stated, "Wage negotiations for all other job categories except flight operations have already been completed, and we regret the union's decision to apply for mediation." However, the company added, "We have made the best possible proposal, including a 5% increase in base salary, and we will continue discussions with the union during the mediation process."
