An executive of IBK (Industrial Bank of Korea) has come under controversy after it was revealed that he drank alcohol with employees and visited a karaoke bar during work hours. Amid an ongoing Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) investigation into improper loans, concerns are mounting over the deterioration of workplace discipline at the state-run bank.
According to financial industry sources on the 4th, IBK Vice President A was reported to have consumed alcohol starting at lunchtime and later visited a karaoke bar while visiting a regional headquarters late last month. This conduct raises potential violations of labor laws. In response, IBK is currently verifying the facts and will decide on possible disciplinary action based on the investigation results.
Vice President A had held key positions before being promoted to his current role last year.
He reportedly explained that the incident occurred as part of an extended schedule while visiting employees for encouragement and was in line with work-related activities. However, despite this explanation, criticism is growing within the bank, particularly from the labor union, regarding the inappropriate behavior of the executive.
Concerns are further amplified by the fact that IBK is currently undergoing a large-scale investigation by the FSS into improper loans, with claims that internal discipline has significantly weakened.
Last month, IBK disclosed a KRW 24 billion embezzlement case, with reports indicating that the total amount of financial misconduct could potentially rise to over KRW 100 billion.
An IBK labor union representative stated, "The bank is facing an internal and external crisis, and management should be setting an example. However, their inappropriate actions are deeply concerning. A thorough investigation and responsible measures are necessary to address this issue."
