"North Korea’s 2nd spy satellite launch imminent"

North Korea is poised to make a second attempt at launching a spy satellite into orbit in “late August or early September,” according to South Korea’s spy agency.

The first endeavor in May ended in failure after the carrier rocket’s second stage malfunctioned.

The National Intelligence Service (NIS) told lawmakers in an Aug. 17 classified briefing that North Korea may try to launch a spy satellite in late August or early September ahead of the country's 75th anniversary on Sept. 9, according to Yoo Sang-bum, one of the lawmakers who attended the briefing.

The agency said North Korea has been testing an engine for the rocket to be used for the satellite launch and has installed an additional land antenna to receive satellite data, Yoo said.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has vowed to produce a number of high-tech weapons systems, including military reconnaissance satellites.

South Korea’s military has said that debris from the satellite indicated that the technology was not yet sophisticated enough to fulfill such objectives.
