Italian space startup FAST Aerospace is advancing the development of a groundbreaking air-launch vehicle.
The company is taking on the challenge of developing a ramjet-powered unmanned aircraft and a rocket that is launched into space from this aircraft.
Currently, FAST Aerospace is focusing on developing the ramjet engine to be used in the unmanned aircraft, and recently secured €500,000 in investment for the development of the engine prototype.
This investment was made by Galaxia, the aerospace technology transfer hub of CDP Venture Capital.
The unmanned aircraft is designed to be 16 meters long and capable of carrying the mounted rocket up to an altitude of 25 kilometers.
The disposable rocket, 'HyperDart,' to be carried by the aircraft is designed to transport up to 250 kilograms of cargo to low Earth orbit.
After launch, the aircraft is designed to be reusable, to be utilized again for the next rocket launch.
The company is developing a ramjet engine prototype capable of reaching speeds of up to Mach 5, aiming for its first burn test by the end of 2025.
Additionally, the first launch of the air-launch vehicle HyperDart is planned for 2029, with two preliminary launches for technology verification scheduled beforehand.
