Pohang City, in collaboration with Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, has initiated inspections of control equipment and joint guidance checks to minimize damage in preparation for high water temperatures and red tides.
According to the National Institute of Fisheries Science, after the cold water belt on the East Coast passes, the continuous heatwave is gradually increasing the water temperature, predicting that high water temperatures and red tides will occur in mid to late July.
In response, Pohang City has secured a budget of 1.7 billion KRW for fisheries disaster-related measures this year, providing liquid oxygen, circulation pumps, and immune boosters.
Additionally, the city has secured over 1,800 public and private control devices to proactively respond to fisheries disasters such as high water temperatures and red tides.
Through SNS text message services, real-time water temperature changes are provided to fishermen, and thorough pre-inspections are conducted, including prohibiting the dense stocking of farmed aquatic organisms and guiding step-by-step farm management measures in the event of red tides and high water temperatures.
Furthermore, the early shipment of farmed aquatic products is encouraged to minimize damage.
Jeong Cheol-young, head of the Fisheries Policy Division, stated, “We will continue to actively secure control equipment and disaster prevention budgets to proactively respond to red tides and high water temperatures. In the event of damage, we will respond quickly to minimize damage to fish farms and ensure management stability.”
