Pro-government media in Türkiye reported on November 21 that Türkiye plans to build a space launch site and a missile testing facility in Somalia, citing President Erdoğan's remarks.
According to the report, President Erdoğan announced these plans during a meeting of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) Central Executive Committee. He stated that the construction of the launch site would mark a milestone, demonstrating Türkiye's commitment to space development.
Earlier, Bloomberg reported in September that the Turkish government was negotiating with the Somali government regarding the construction of the launch site.
The report further noted that the project is part of President Erdoğan's "10-Year National Space Program," announced in February 2021.
Somalia is geographically well-suited for a rocket launch site, located at the easternmost tip of Africa, facing open seas, and close to the equator.
