The sounding rocket launch site at Europe’s Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana, which has been inactive since the 1990s, will resume operations in 2025.
As part of efforts to modernize the Guiana Space Centre, European launch companies are expected to carry out various types of launches from the facility in the future.
The French space agency CNES, which manages the Guiana Space Centre, announced that it has signed a contract with French rocket startup Opus Aerospace to launch the suborbital sounding rocket "Mésange" from the sounding rocket launch site in 2025.
The sounding rocket launch site at the Guiana Space Centre, known as Ensemble de Lancement Fusées-Sondes (ELFS), was completed in early 1968. On April 9 of the same year, the "Véronique" sounding rocket was launched from the site for the first time.
Reports indicate that more than 350 sounding rocket launches were conducted at the site between 1968 and 1992.
Opus Aerospace, founded in France in 2019, is developing a small space launch vehicle called "Sterne."
The suborbital sounding rocket "Mésange," scheduled for launch in 2025, will serve as a technology demonstrator for the "Sterne" rocket.
